With some big names and some big shouts coming from Joanne Evans it was all kicking off. Some strong competition from Dai Short and dark horse Rachel Heydon the competition turned serious. Judith Whitton one of the favourites showed composure throughout. Ones to watch for the future are Tracey Caplin, Gareth Evans, David John and Roger Lloyd. Few contenders dropped out like Norman Jenkins and a hungover Anwen Jenkins didn't feel up for the task. Well done to all the parents that took part. Pictures will be up online soon from the event so keep an eye out. Plenty of talent here now to take Betty Grays over 85s crown in the future!!!</div>

Joe Morris Memorial proves big success!!!

The first Joe Morris Memorial proved a huge success today with some great matches from all competitors aged 5 up to 15. A big thanks to Stan Eastwood, Vince Dragone, Dennis Bromage and John Finnemore for all their efforts in help running the event. 
 
Cadet Boys proved a close contest with Ryan Oyler beating Chris Griffiths 3-2 in the final. It proved neck and neck throughout the match with Oyler clinching the final set 11-3. On his way to the final Ryan overcame Liam Winder 3-0 in the quarters and Callum Evans 3-0 in the semis. On Chris' way to the final he seen off Jonathan Bisp 3-0, Jac Jenkins 3-1. 
 
Cadet girls had a small entry but still proved a challenge for all competitng. With Catlin Williams, Soffi Jenkins, Charlotte Slye and Lydia John competing in a round robin. Caitlin Williams walked away with another winners trophy for the cabinet and a silver for Charlotte Slye. Big battle for 2nd place between Soffi and Charlotte Slye with Charl just pipping it in the 5th. Huge well done to Lydia John also still only 10 but gave all the girls a scare with some very close sets. 
 
12 players competed in the afternoon to become Carmarthen Dragon under 13 champion. In the final group of 3 for 1st place it was between Tatsuki Dale-Thomas, Lydia John and Cade Short. Another close group that could have gone either way. First up to play were Tatsuki vs Lydia but Tats spin proved a bit tough for Lydia. Lydia lost out 0-2 but again extremely impresses with her attitude throughout all her matches. Next on was Cade to meet Lydia and this proved another battle with Lyds taking the first set 12-10. Cade then stepped his game up with some big forehands to take the next 2 sets and the match. In the final match for the group it was a battle for gold. Tatsuki stepped up first to take the first set in a close 14-12. Cade picked up his match to win the 2nd 11-7 so who had the nerve to take the final set. Tats had a great start in the 3rd set with Cade creeping his way back up but again Tats' use of spin proved difficult to play against and became the under 13 champion. 
 
Was great to see a number of under 9 competitors at the first of many Joe Morris Memorial Opens. Some great performances from the Lara Whitton, Anna Hursey and Louie Evans but it was between 2 for the gold spot. Luca Caplin of Mumbles and Joseph Roberts of Cardiff played on table one but who had the nerve to take gold. Luca played out of his skin to win the first set 11-9 and the second 11-8.

After and eventful weekend of team matches the boys pulled off two wins against Guernsey and Ilse of Man. They lost out to strong opponents in Scotland, England, Jersey and eventual winners Ireland. 
In the girls team it was a similar story with Wales beating Guernsey but losing out to Scotland, England and Ireland who finished as champions. 
 
In the individual competition there were some great contests. Harry Langley and Matthew Francis finished 2nd in their groups but lost out to strong opponents from England and Ireland. Jack Cole lost out in a tough group and reached the quarter finals of the consolation losing out to the Scottish number 1 player. Jake Simeone pulled out of his consolation match due to illness and Steffan Griffiths had suffered an injury the day before so had to withdraw from the singles event. 
Victoria went through to the main event, having come second in her group, though she went out to Rebecca Plaistow of Scotland in the next round. Jamie Lee lost out 3-2 in the consolation quarters along with Bethany Brewer who lost at the same stage. Dawn Jones made it one step further and got a bronze medal after losing out to Scottish opposition. Lydia John went home with a gold medal after winning the consolation event beating the Scottish opponent who earlier beat both Jamie Lee Harley and Dawn Jones.

 Lydia beat Daisy Kershaw Gurnsey's No1 3-1 in QF and Jennie Yang from Scotland in SF after losing first 2 sets she fought back to win 3-2. Lydia then went on to the final where she defeated Scotland's Faye Leggett in straight games to win the gold! 
Player of the weekend must go to Steffan Griffiths who battled through injury with great determination not to let his team mates down. This gained Wales some valuable points in the team event. 
 
Huge well done to Steffan Griffiths, Harry Langley, Joe Simeone, Matthew Francis and Lydia John. They gained great experience with Steff being the only player who will be too old for next year. 
Well done to all the players that played hard all weekend and gained valuable experience to carry forward to next year.

First Week Holiday Camp

First of the Easter holiday camps were held at Mumbles table tennis club. The regional squad got some much needed practice in time for the Home Internationals held in Scotland. Great session with fantastic playing conditions with hard work being showed from all the Regional Squad. Big thank you to Stephen Heydon for organising the day.

A development camp was then held in Carmarthen leisure centre where the kids from all over West Wales had a chance to gain further practice.  Big thanks to Judith Whitton, Dai Short, Jo Simeone, Dennis Bromage and Josh for their help on the day. The kids had a great day with 3 hours of training followed with a swim. Everyone enjoyed with another Development day on being held on Tuesday.</div>

Sport Relief

Huge well done to Mumbles table tennis who put on a Ping Pong-a-thon held at West Cross Community Centre. In total over £700 was raised towards Sports Relief. Starting at 10am a match was played continuously for 10hours with Mumbles taking on the Rest of the World.

Glamorgan are Champions

After a long weekend taking in 7 matches Glamorgan Seniors have finally managed to gain promotion to the Premier Division of the County Championships, remaining unbeaten throughout the entire weekend. Saturday consisted of 4 matches and with solid performances from all Glamorgan players we finished the day joint 2nd with Hertfordshire and Warickshire all on 7 points having attained 3 wins and a draw. Leading the way were Kent who fielded such luminaries as Sule Olaleye (5 time African Champion, twice Olympic player and world cup quarter finalist) and Lewis Gray and they remained unbeaten on the 1st day. The second day was D-day and saw Glamorgan facing Hertfordshire, Warwickshire and, the team to beat, Kent. Imagine our surprise on Sunday morning when arriving at the venue and realising that Kent had replaced Lewis Gray due to a prior commitment.....but the smile was short-lived as we realised Lewis had been replaced in the Kent team by Kazeem Adeleke (Nigerian International player and has played professionally in Portugal)!!! This was going to be tough! The day started with a convincing 8-2 win over Hertfordshire. With Warickshire losing there 1st match of the day this left us in a clear 2nd place, with unbeaten leaders Kent 1 point ahead. To get us into first place we HAD to beat Kent, a draw was not enough, and with the two Nigerian internationals in there midst we theoretically started the match 4-0 down!! We had no option other than to win every remaining game for a 6-4 win! Games went to form in the main the Nigerians won there 4 singles as expected, although we did put up some resistance. With some great performances and over 2 hours of play we found ourselves in sight of the winning post, 5-4 ahead with the final womens singles game remaining, Stevie Grech vs Emma Tovey....we HAD to win. A close first game went to Emma, we found ourselves 1-0 down, the pressure was building and it was starting to show....the whole hall knowing the importance of this one game had stopped play to settle back an watch. After a nip and tuck 20mins Stevie found herself 2-1 down, this was looking a case of so near but yet so far, but Stevie used all her experience to scrape back to 2-2!.....a tense final game ensued and to the delight of her teammates Stevie prevailed 11-8 in the 5th!!!.... having won 6-4 we were now one point in front of Kent, and with a better sets average only required a draw against Warickshire to win the division and gain promotion to the County Premier Division. Going 2-0 down was not the start we expected.....was it to be a case of "done the hard work...but let it slip?".....Kent looked on, quietly hoping for the match to slip away from us.....but it was not to be. With assured performances from all players Glamorgan took the match 7-3 and with it the 1st Division County Champs title. A great weekend with assured performances from all players who were Wiktor Dzonkowski, Dean Cundy, Martin Gunn, Neil Wright, Stevie Grech, Claire Flannagan and Anna Labuz. I feel a special mention should go to both Anna Labuz, who remained unbeaten throughout the weekend 12/12....great performance Anna and some fantastic wins....but in particular, to Stevie Grech who, when faced with theoretically the match to win or lose the title and under great pressure showed her class and kept it together to bring home the title. 
 
This now means Glamorgan have a senior team, junior team and cadet team in the Premier division of their age group.
