Stephen Gertsen has been appointed as East England regional coach and will be moving to England and starting his new post on January 4th. This means that unfortunately Stephen will have to resign as South West Wales director for the region. <br /><br />I personally would like to wish Stephen all the best in the future; he has benefited table tennis in the West and especially Swansea immensely!!! With the top two teams in the Premier League not playing Penlan ‘C’ took advantage to go top of the league after defeating Penlan ‘B’ 24-17 with Martin Gunn winning 9-1. Ammanford ‘A’ beat Penlan ‘E’ 28-6, Mike Rees and Nigel Stopher both winning 9-1. Penyrheol ‘A’ recorded their first win of the season by defeating Carmarthen ‘C’ 24-14 thanks to Paul Booth winning 9-3. Carmarthen ‘A’ beat Carmarthen ‘B’ 24-17 despite John Finnemore putting in a fine performance winning 7-4 for the losers.<br />In Division One Penlan ‘G’ defeated Cam/Cabin ‘B’ 21-15 to move to the top of the table, Jonathon Francis winning 9-2 and Ben Mora 9-4. Betty and Paul in the Awards!!!

Betty Gray MBE has been nominated for a number of Life Time Acheivement awards within the last 3 weeks. Following these nominations we have learnt that Betty who is President of the Swansea League and President of the Table Tennis Association of Wales, has reached the final of the: Welsh National Coaches awards, the British National Coaches awards and the Swansea City Coaching Awards.<br /><br />In all of these she is in the running for a Life Time Achievement Award. Obviously, there is no garuntee she will win but it is a great honour for her and all of us that she has been chosen as a finalist in all three events.<br /><br />We wish her the very best of luck at all the events which are listed below:<br />November 24th - Welsh National Awards - Welsh Institute of Sport, Cardiff - midday event<br />November 30th - British National Awards - The Brewery Conference Centre, London - evening event<br />December 3rd - Swansea City Awards - The Brangwyn Hall, Swansea - evening event.<br /><br />Huge congratulations also has to go to Paul Karabardak for being nominated for Sports Man of the Year in the Swansea City Awards. <br /><br />Good luck to both!!!!

This week saw the start of the Premier Division where the current champions Penlan ‘A’ got off to a winning start defeating Carmarthen ‘C’ 25-8 thanks to Ceri James winning 9-0. Penlan ‘D’ beat Penyrheol ‘A’ 27-4 with Lee Morgan winning 9-0 and Scott Cundy 9-1. Newly promoted Carmarthen ‘A’ started well by defeating Penlan ‘E’ 26-12, Sven Severyns and Jeff Parsons both winning 9-2. Penlan ‘C’ narrowly beat Carmarthen ‘B’ 23-17 with Martin Gunn leading the way winning 9-1. Closest math of the week saw Penlan ‘B’ gain a 21-20 victory over Ammanford ‘A’with Josh Jenkins winning 9-3, the match was settled when Josh Jenkins and Luke Lyons won the doubles 3-2, Ammanfords Nigel Stopher winning 8-5.<br /><br />Division One leaders Penlan ‘G’ maintained their impressive start to the season by defeating second placed Ammanford ‘B’ 24-13 for who Nigel Stopher won 8-5. Cam/Cabin ‘B’ remain unbeaten after beating Penlan ‘F’ 28-9 with Graham Butler winning 9-2 and Martin Jenkins 9-3. Carmarthen ‘D’ maintained their challenge with a 25-12 victory over Penyrheol ‘B’, Martyn Fenner winning 9-1 and Rob Wilkins 9-2. WHAT A START!!!

Carmarthen<br /><br />What a start to the junior Team Championship of Wales. As the first ever junior team to be entred by Carmarthen they won every match today and are currently sitting top of the division. The morning session started against Cathays with a 6-1 win. Then the following match we faced Greenhouse with a 5-2 win. The next match against Newport was our toughest by far with the doubles match proving vital for a match win. The doubles went to the 5th end and we scraped a win. The match ended 4-3 with some great performances from George Powis, Paul Joules and Niall Owen.<br /><br />Well done boys lets carry it through to the next one!!<br /><br />Swansea Juniors A<br /><br />The first match was against Greenhouse C 10.00 am start<br /><br />Swansea lost this match 5-2 <br /><br />Max Clews won both games for Swansea and both Tommy Haydon & Peter Morse put in solid performances against a strong Greenhouse C side which will be a top side in the second division.<br /><br />The second match was against Catheys Cardiff A 12.30 start<br /><br />Swansea won this match 5-2<br /><br />Max Clewes won both his games and Max & Tommy then won the doubles. The match was sealed with good wins by both Tommy & Peter.<br /><br />The third match was against North Gwent 15.00 start<br /><br />Swansea won this match 4-3<br /><br />Max Clewes won both his games and assisted in the doubles by Tommy won in the 5 set this was an important win giving Swansea 3-1 lead Tommy also picked up 1 win. Peter fought really well against Laura Edwards and Laura Price.<br /><br />All three Swansea players conducted themselves really well and I think they will have enjoyed and learned from the day’s experience.<br /><br />Player of the day has to go to Max Clewes who won all his games but was well supported by both Tommy Haydon and Peter Morse.<br /><br />Kevin Gertsen

Results for the West Wales boys ended up Niall Owen (Carmarthen) 2nd, Harry Langley (Penlan) 3rd, Tobby Johnston (Carmarthen) 4th and Harri Bright (Carmarthen) 5th. In the under 13s Peter Morse of Penlan finished 3rd on countback. Well done to all the youngsters and will hopefully bring back some silverwear in the next dragin event.

New Club in Ammanford!!!

With Table Tennis dying in Ammanford we have managed to open up a community club in a local primary school/community hall. The school has a large sports hall with a gym and changing rooms. Table Tennis in the area on the whole is going really well with community clubs all having a healthy interest. This season we have had players from the area represent Wales in every age category such as Ceri James, Lee Morgan, Matt Lancey, Josh Jenkins, Tom Heydon, Alex Francis, Stephen Gertsen, Paul Karabardak and Dean Cundy. Carmarthen Table Tennis Club hosted another annual ‘West Wales Closed’ table tennis event for players from the Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire areas. Lee Morgan success continues

Lee Morgan and Charlotte Carey confirmed their places for the Welsh team in the UK School Games in September as they won the boys and girls singles respectively today at the Sport Wales National Centre.<br /><br />Having got through his group unscathed, Lee played Steve Fawkes (3-1) in round 1, Ashley Stravakis (3-1) in round 2 and then Matt Lancey in the semi finals (3-1). Conor Edwards meanwhile was making way in the other half of the draw with 5 set battles against Stefan Jeczalik in round 1, and Chris Griffiths in the Q final. Chris had two match points in the 5th end. Conor then faced number 1 seed Josh Jenkins in his semi final. Conor managed to stay close to the table and exchange spins with Josh that forced too many errors from the Swansea player and Conor moved into the final winning 3-2.<br /><br />In the final Conor had plenty of chances but failed to put away the high balls he was given. Lee upped the quality in the 4th and 5th sets to win the event and book his place to Gateshead for the School Games.<br /><br />Other notable wins was from Ryan Oyler against Jared Parsons in round 1.<br /><br />Charlotte won the girls competition against Hannah Avery 3-0 in their final. Hannah beat Nicole Hall 3-2 in the semi final whilst Charlotte beat Sadie Edwards 3-0. Nicole had a chance in the group against Charlotte at 2-2 in sets, but the Ebbw Vale star found extra motivation to win the 5th set comfortably.<br /><br />Nantymoel’s Sharlene Williams beat Greenhouse girl Naomi James 3-1 in the girls’ consolation event. In the morning we visited Ysgol Nangaredig for an exhibition then stopped in Parc y Scarlets to show them how its done. Day one of West Wales.<br /><br />It's DeJaVu for Lee Morgan as he does the same as the Newport Open. Lee won both Cadets and Junior singles. He played some big attacking serves in both finals against Connor Edwards in both finals. Connar played some great table tennis himself by taking out number 1 seed Cameron Thomas in the semi final.<br /><br />In the girls event it was a similar story for Charlotte Carey. In both finals she beat the Irish.<br /><br />Also another great result for Thomas Heydon. Not only was he part of the winning team in the Welsh Primary School Championships but also winning the Dragon under 15s event also. SWANSEA CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE END JOINT FIRST

The Greenhouse A and Swansea teams showed their strength by winning 4 out of 5 matches against the other regional Centre of Excellence teams, in a great night of competition at the Welsh institute of sport on Monday 29th of March. There were a total of 6 teams competing against each other, including Swansea, Cardiff, Greenhouse A and B, Gwent and North Wales. Time constraints meant the matches were played at a fast and furious pace.<br /><br />The format was teams of 3 players, with each player having a single match against the same number from the opposing team. There was a real mixture of youth and experience competing, with young teams from Greenhouse and Gwent giving a good account of themselves but not getting the results they wanted. Greenhouse A, lead confidently by Connor Edwards, were unbeaten until there last match and looking good for the win until North Wales managed to pull off an excellent 2-1 victory. Alex Valyadis achieved his best win of the night against Nicole hall. Swansea had managed to beat every other team except Greenhouse A, after some close matches with Cardiff and Gwent. The team that travelled down from North Wales battled hard, with Gabbi Wan showing some excellent form to beat Caitlin Williams in a 2-1 win over Cardiff. Gwent had an excellent 2-1 win over North Wales after Angharad Phillips won the first match against a spirited Beth Roberts, with Ashley Perry beating Alex Valyandis and Jac Jenkins defeating Gabbi Wan.<br /><br />All players showed good attitude during the competition and the event was played in the right spirit. Well done to all those involved.<br /><br />Finishing positions were; <br />1. Greenhouse A (Connor Edwards, Nicole hall, Chris Griffiths) 4 wins <br />1. 5x60 scheme in Swansea

TTAW and the 5x60 manager of Swansea are in talks to get Table Tennis into the Comprehensive Schools around the area. The aim is to attract new faces into the sport and encourage them to attend the community clubs around Swansea. A plan has been put together by the TTAW and hopefully things will get started very soon.<br /><br />Thanks to Jon Francis, Ryan Jenkins, Stephen Gertsen and Stan Eastwood for pushing the project and getting the ball rolling.

Gertsen won 19 out of 19 throughout the season and along with Gareth Herbert was the only other player who didnt lose. Gertsen plays for Reading based club Olop Impact who finished 2nd in the league behind TTK Greenhouse, Olop will now compete in the playoff weekend in May for a place in the premiership. South Africa to play West Wales Open!!

Prior to the Commonwealth Games in October a team of 5 men from South Africa will visit Wales to undergo training and test matches against the Welsh men's team.<br />Shane Overmeyer, Luke Abrahams, Theo Cogill, Kurt Lingerveldt and Itumeleng Molahloe will be flying into Heathrow on the 19th April and stay until the 26th April. As part of the visit they will also compete at the West Wales Open in Carmarthen.

Table Tennis is now on the rise in West Wales. With phone calls coming from all over the County looking to open community clubs. With the previous school championships being a success the word is spreading about Table Tennis. With table tennis now being the most played activity for extra curriculum activity other schools are getting on the band wagon and looking to set up clubs. Hopefully with the support from the local councils we can get another 3 set up in the next month or so.

With 7 schools competing and over 90 entries it proved to be a massive success. With the tournament based on the Dragon format it allowed each individual to play a series of matches. By using this format each individual got their overall final placing.<br /><br />Ysgol Rhydygors from Carmarthen stole the show with Lars Calford won the year 9 and below event with Jonah Lewis gaining 2nd position (both being members of Carmarthen Table Tennis Club). An award was also handed out for the highest placed female. This went to Sophie Richards from Bro Myrddin who finished 5th overall. Just behind Sophie was Bronwen Lewis who beat a number of the favourites. Bronwen is also a member of Cramarthen Table Tennis Club and also Bro Myrddin.<br /><br />In the senior category Justin Cole became Carmarthenshire schools 6th form and below Champion by beating Richard Fisher (Rydygors), Richard Sourbutts (Bryngwyn), Michael Charles (Rhydygors) and strong favourite William Carvhalio of QE.<br /><br />With Rhydygors winning both events and a number of their students finishing highly in the final standing ‘Team of the Tournament’ deservedly was awarded to Ysgol Rhydygors. <br /><br />Well done to all the competitors and a big thank you to all of those whp helped out.<br /><br />Thank you<br /><br />Aled Howell

In the final Paul beat Welsh number 3 Steve Jenkins in a close 3-2 match. Steve was leading 2-1 in sets and 5-1 but Paul regained his composure to take the title and prize fund.<br />Steve beat Chinese star <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Yongbo</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Zhang</span> 3-1 in the semis and Paul beat Steve <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Gertsen</span> in the other. He met Lewis once again in the semis of the junior event and then met fellow practice partner Josh Jenkins in the final. <div>Great start to the Dragon for some of the newer players in West Wales. On their debut to the dragon event Mickey Moore (Bryngwyn) finished 5th in the under 15s and 21st in the under 13s. Chloe James of Bryngwyn finished 15th in under 15s and 25th in under 13s. William Nash also in his first dragon event finished a respectful 14th in the under 15s. James Nash, Gething Jones and Paul Joules competed in their 2nd dragon event and it was blatant to see a vast improvement. James Nash (Bro Myrddin) finishing 13th in the under 15s (one ahead of his brother) and 18th in the under 13s. Gething Jones also from Bro Myrddin finished 10th in the under 15s and 15th in the under 13s. Record Entry For December Dragon Tournament & Dragons Listings

Just 2 weekends before Christmas saw the the December Dragon Tournament already contested by 56 players, spread between the 3 age groups.<br /><br />There has now been an incredible 89 young players who have sampled competitive table tennis via the Dragon Tournaments. Indeed such is now the clamour for entries that the organisers were advising players to get their entry forms off early, as the competition is full before the closing date! Brilliant turnout!<br /><br />The under 11 event saw <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">Jac</span> Jenkins in fine form winning his 2<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">nd</span> under 11 Dragon, runner up was Matthew Francis. Player of the under 11 event however, must be North <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">Gwent</span>’s Lewis Jones, who playing in his 1st Dragon managed 3rd place.<br /><br />In the under 15 event ace defender Ethan Lewis finally managed a well deserved win after being close in the last 2 Dragons, Jamie Davies was runner up for the 2<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">nd</span> time. Surprise of this event was <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-error">TTK</span> <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-error">Tonypandy</span>’s <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_6" class="blsp-spelling-error">Callum</span> Thomas who finished in 3rd place to spoil the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_7" class="blsp-spelling-error">Ferndale</span> party. <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_8" class="blsp-spelling-error">TTK</span> <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_9" class="blsp-spelling-error">Tonypandy</span>’s new coach Alan Monks has certainly done a good job on this young man.<br />The under 13s event also held some <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_10" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">surprises</span>, this time in the form of the eventual winner Alex Francis from the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_11" class="blsp-spelling-error">Penlan</span> club, and a brilliant 3rd place by Caitlin Williams of <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_12" class="blsp-spelling-error">Nantymoel</span>.
