SWANSEA CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE END JOINT FIRST

The Greenhouse A and Swansea teams showed their strength by winning 4 out of 5 matches against the other regional Centre of Excellence teams, in a great night of competition at the Welsh institute of sport on Monday 29th of March. There were a total of 6 teams competing against each other, including Swansea, Cardiff, Greenhouse A and B, Gwent and North Wales. Time constraints meant the matches were played at a fast and furious pace.<br /><br />The format was teams of 3 players, with each player having a single match against the same number from the opposing team. There was a real mixture of youth and experience competing, with young teams from Greenhouse and Gwent giving a good account of themselves but not getting the results they wanted. Greenhouse A, lead confidently by Connor Edwards, were unbeaten until there last match and looking good for the win until North Wales managed to pull off an excellent 2-1 victory. Alex Valyadis achieved his best win of the night against Nicole hall. Swansea had managed to beat every other team except Greenhouse A, after some close matches with Cardiff and Gwent. The team that travelled down from North Wales battled hard, with Gabbi Wan showing some excellent form to beat Caitlin Williams in a 2-1 win over Cardiff. Gwent had an excellent 2-1 win over North Wales after Angharad Phillips won the first match against a spirited Beth Roberts, with Ashley Perry beating Alex Valyandis and Jac Jenkins defeating Gabbi Wan.<br /><br />All players showed good attitude during the competition and the event was played in the right spirit. 5x60 scheme in Swansea

TTAW and the 5x60 manager of Swansea are in talks to get Table Tennis into the Comprehensive Schools around the area. The aim is to attract new faces into the sport and encourage them to attend the community clubs around Swansea. A plan has been put together by the TTAW and hopefully things will get started very soon.<br /><br />Thanks to Jon Francis, Ryan Jenkins, Stephen Gertsen and Stan Eastwood for pushing the project and getting the ball rolling.

Gertsen won 19 out of 19 throughout the season and along with Gareth Herbert was the only other player who didnt lose. Gertsen plays for Reading based club Olop Impact who finished 2nd in the league behind TTK Greenhouse, Olop will now compete in the playoff weekend in May for a place in the premiership. The date however clashes with the UKCC level 3 coaching course so whether Gertsen can play remains to be seen!!<br /><br />Llanelli's Aled Howells Kingfisher team were relegated but Howells was unavailable for final weekend which would have made all the difference!!<br />(Aled winning 12 and only losing 2)

South Africa to play West Wales Open!!

Prior to the Commonwealth Games in October a team of 5 men from South Africa will visit Wales to undergo training and test matches against the Welsh men's team.<br />Shane Overmeyer, Luke Abrahams, Theo Cogill, Kurt Lingerveldt and Itumeleng Molahloe will be flying into Heathrow on the 19th April and stay until the 26th April. As part of the visit they will also compete at the West Wales Open in Carmarthen.

TABLE TENNIS BOOMING IN COUNTY!!

Table Tennis is now on the rise in West Wales. With phone calls coming from all over the County looking to open community clubs. With the previous school championships being a success the word is spreading about Table Tennis. With table tennis now being the most played activity for extra curriculum activity other schools are getting on the band wagon and looking to set up clubs. Hopefully with the support from the local councils we can get another 3 set up in the next month or so.

With 7 schools competing and over 90 entries it proved to be a massive success. With the tournament based on the Dragon format it allowed each individual to play a series of matches. By using this format each individual got their overall final placing.<br /><br />Ysgol Rhydygors from Carmarthen stole the show with Lars Calford won the year 9 and below event with Jonah Lewis gaining 2nd position (both being members of Carmarthen Table Tennis Club). An award was also handed out for the highest placed female. This went to Sophie Richards from Bro Myrddin who finished 5th overall. Just behind Sophie was Bronwen Lewis who beat a number of the favourites. Bronwen is also a member of Cramarthen Table Tennis Club and also Bro Myrddin.<br /><br />In the senior category Justin Cole became Carmarthenshire schools 6th form and below Champion by beating Richard Fisher (Rydygors), Richard Sourbutts (Bryngwyn), Michael Charles (Rhydygors) and strong favourite William Carvhalio of QE.<br /><br />With Rhydygors winning both events and a number of their students finishing highly in the final standing ‘Team of the Tournament’ deservedly was awarded to Ysgol Rhydygors. <br /><br />Well done to all the competitors and a big thank you to all of those whp helped out.<br /><br />Thank you<br /><br />Aled Howell

Irish Duo Paul <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">McCreery</span> and Na <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Liu</span> were champions at the Cardiff GP on Sunday. In the final Paul beat Welsh number 3 Steve Jenkins in a close 3-2 match. Steve was leading 2-1 in sets and 5-1 but Paul regained his composure to take the title and prize fund.<br />Steve beat Chinese star <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Yongbo</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Zhang</span> 3-1 in the semis and Paul beat Steve <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Gertsen</span> in the other. Stephen preformed out of his skin in the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">earlyer</span> match and showed great <span style="color:#ff0000;">CHARACTER</span> to beat <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">Wlesh</span> ranked Number 4 Patrick Thomas. With Naomi Owen losing out in her semi 3-0 to Amanda <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">Mogey</span>, Na <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">Liu</span> took the title from her team mate 3-0 [9,6,4]. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">Liu</span> beat Charlotte Carey in her semi final match.Paul made it a very successful weekend in winning the U21 category against Patrick Thomas. Patrick beat <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">Ceri</span> James and Paul beat Scott <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">Cundy</span> in the respective semi finals. The Welsh Closed Championships will be held at the Welsh Institute of Sport over the Weekend of the 6<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">th</span>/7<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">th</span> March Junior Events Saturday and Senior Event Sunday.<br /><br />In what looks to be a strong entry for a few years. Lee Morgan was the winner of the Band 4 singles beating <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">Filton</span> College pupil Andy Smith. Scott <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">Cundy</span> and Josh Jenkins were the Semi finalists there. Alan Monks, who is a Greenhouse coach, came out of early retirement to win both 5 & 6 banded events beating Cameron <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">Thomas</span> <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">and Steven</span> Slater respectively.<br /><br />Irish duo Paul <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-error">McCreery</span> and Amanda <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-error">Mogey</span> were the winners of both band 1events respectively at the Cardiff Grand <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_6" class="blsp-spelling-error">Prix</span>. The Polish star beat Stephen <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_9" class="blsp-spelling-error">Gertsen</span> in the other semi final. <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_10" class="blsp-spelling-error">Mogey</span>, who studied at <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_11" class="blsp-spelling-error">Glamorgan</span> University, beat Chloe Thomas in the semi final before winning her final.<br /><br />Hannah Avery was runner up in the women's band 3 singles. as was <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_12" class="blsp-spelling-error">Ceri</span> James in the men's band 3.
